Zella Dorthy Mathewson, 88, of Temperance, MI, passed away December 27, 2021, at Hampton Manor, Lambertville, MI. She was born in Toledo, OH, to Ward and Emma Pearl (Heimer) Fuller on August 27, 1933. Zella graduated Salutatorian of Monclova High School in 1950. She would have been Valedictorian if not for the infamous bubble gum incident.
She married Arlyn V. Mathewson on January 24, 1953 and enjoyed 67 years together. It was her greatest desire to be reunited with him.
Zella is survived by her children Chris (Deb) Mathewson of Franklin, NC, Don (Holly) Mathewson of Temperance, MI, Patty (David) Werner of West Branch, MI, and Robert (Carrisa) Mathewson of Lambertville, MI. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Zella was predeceased by her loving husband (whose final words were “She’s my beloved wife”) and all nine of her siblings.
She had a multitude of jobs during her career, but she enjoyed many years as the secretary of the nursing program at The University of Toledo.
Zella had a love of travel and spent most of her life camping and seeing the sights across America.
Her other love was creating. Zella made all her daughters’ wedding and bridesmaids’ gowns in her earlier years. As she got older, she spent her time crocheting hats for babies and cancer survivors, and lap robes for nursing home patients through Midwest Headhuggers.
At Zella’s request visitation and funeral services will be private.
Those wishing to offer memorials, in lieu of flowers, are asked to consider Midwest Headhuggers C/O the Bedford Branch Library.
