Thelma R. Lanz

April 12, 1933 ~ August 22, 2022 (age 89)

Obituary

Thelma R. Lanz, age 89, of Sylvania, OH and formerly of Toledo, entered into eternal life on Monday, August 22, 2022 at home with her daughters at her side. She was born April 12, 1933 in Wainwright, OH to Enrico and Agnese (Norcini) Tamborini. Thelma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert J. (Bob); her parents; in-laws, Fred and Margaret Lanz; her brothers, Jordan (Anna) Tamborini and Carl (Opal) Tamborini; sister, Delma Tamborini; as well as sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret (Bob) Untch, Virginia Milligan, Anne (John) Gale, Mary Jane Domer, and Fred (Jane) Lanz.

Growing up in a largely Italian village with immigrant parents, Thelma’s primary language was Italian until she started school. She was proud of her heritage and maintained lasting friendships with her Wainwright friends. On May 4, 1957, Thelma married the love of her life, Bob, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Wainwright. She and Bob enjoyed nearly 54 wonderful years together until his death on January 15, 2011. While raising their daughters, there were many family vacations to Florida and several sites in the Western United States that they looked forward to all year. Thelma and Bob greatly enjoyed travelling extensively, first all over the United States, and in their retirement, abroad to countless countries. Once they were bitten by the international travel bug, there was never a dull moment! Bob was eager to start planning the next vacation as soon as they returned from the previous one, and Thelma was a sport and went along with his plans! They were described by many as a “perfect match,” and she missed him dearly. She was an avid reader and gardener, enjoyed watching tennis matches on television, and birdwatching. Regardless of the time of day, she never turned down a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie! Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Thelma was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Dennison, OH, Maumee Valley School of Nursing, Mary Manse College, and The University of Toledo. As an RN, she enjoyed a long career in the fields of nursing and nursing education, working at many hospitals and teaching at St. Vincent School of Nursing. She retired from Whitmer High School and remained friends with many of her co-workers through the years.

Thelma will be greatly missed by her daughters, Robin Lanz and Marissa Ann (Michael) Hutzman; and her beautiful granddaughter, Harmony Harrington, her “Sugar Plum.” She is also survived by her cousin, Estelle Day; nieces and nephews; and many kind friends and neighbors.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their loving care, especially Nurse Renee, and her long-time physician, Dr. Linda Klein, for her exemplary care over many years.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at The Historic Church of St. Patrick, 130 Avondale Avenue, Toledo, OH 43604. Reverend Monsignor Christopher P. Vasko will preside. The family will greet guests one hour prior in the church.
