Ted Summers Obituary

Ted A. Summers, lovingly known as “Poppy” to his family, of Sylvania, passed away at the age of 85 during the early morning hours of April 12, 2026. A true time capsule, Ted leaves behind a lifetime of memories for his family and friends to cherish.

Ted was born in Cleveland on December 12, 1940 to his mother, Sylvia. He is reunited with her, as well as his siblings: Hiram “Sonny” Summers, Ida (Tom) Storer, Harry (Dorothy) Summers, Audrey (Swede Johnson) Long, Juanita (Ted) Hansen, and Albert “Bud” (Helen) Summers.

As a young boy, Ted took on odd jobs that helped instill a lifelong dedication to hard work. He credited his mother with shaping his strong work ethic and took great pride in passing that philosophy on to his family. He began his management career at Parkman Egg Company and further refined his leadership skills through coursework at Owens Community College, The Ohio State University, and Purdue University. He later became the owner and operator of Convenient Food Mart in Sylvania, where he worked for 14 years.  He loved working alongside his wife and family and especially enjoyed interacting with customers.

Ted was active in the community, working with the Sylvania City Council and later serving as a Citizens Patrol volunteer with the Sylvania Police Department.  He loved to golf and was instrumental in organizing community golf outings.

Ted met the love of his life, Loretta Summers (née DiPenti), in 1957 on a blind date. They married in 1961 and welcomed their three children: Tim Summers; Tracy (Greg) Costello; and Tammy Gresko. He cherished each of his grandchildren—Anastassia, Angiovanna, Nicholas, Anthony, Ryan and Adam (Mckenna Berger). He was also a devoted uncle to his beloved nieces and nephews.

Fully committed to his roles as husband, father, grandfather and uncle, Ted always put his family first and said an individual prayer for each loved one every day. He also leaves behind his special lifelong friend, Jim (Irene) Herbst.

Ted’s family will think of him every time they play a game of euchre, enjoy a peanut butter cookie, or create a spreadsheet. He will forever be remembered as the superhero who always came to their rescue.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Shirley Bodi, the nurses, and staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Ebeid Hospice Center, Sylvania for the respect shown to Ted during his final days.

In accordance with Ted’s wishes, no services or burial will be held. His family encourages loved ones to share memories at www.reebfuneralhome.com.  Those wishing to honor his memory may consider a contribution to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
