Richard Saxe Obituary

Richard Warren Saxe died Tuesday, September 11, 2018.  He was 95 years old.

“Dick” was born in Homewood, Illinois on August 8, 1923 and grew up in Chicago.  Following service as an infantry officer in WWII he returned to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago while serving as a teacher and principal in the Chicago Public Schools.  He was recalled to military service during the Korean War, where he again commanded an infantry platoon.  He married his high school sweetheart, June Lillian Hoffman in June 1947.  They enjoyed a long and happy marriage until her death in September 2014. 

In 1966 Dick and June moved to Toledo when he accepted a faculty position with The University of Toledo’s College of Education.  He rose to full professor and served as chairman of the Department of Administration and Associate Dean of Research and Development.  He was the author or editor of eight books on educational leadership, and wrote over 80 scholarly articles. Upon his retirement in 1990 he was named a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus.

Dick is survived by his brother Robert and by numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters Mora and Elizabeth and by brothers Edmund, Albert and Charles.  He leaves behind friends who loved and admired him. Services will be private.
