Richard Dubiel Obituary

Richard Dubiel was born in Sobniow, Poland on October 13, 1932. He passed away on December 7, 2023, after a long illness. He was 91 years of age.

Richard was 7 years old when he and his family’s life was shattered by the Nazi invasion of Poland. When he was 10, Richard and his family were interred in the Konigshuttte forced labor camp until the end of World War II. In difficult times, he learned to rely on the positive, uplifting temperament of his father. The family was allowed to immigrate to the United States in 1949.

After arriving in the United States, Richard worked full-time in a stamping plant while also attending school. In his spare time, he went to the movies and always claimed this is where he learned English. In 1950, he was drafted into the US Army and served in West Germany until he was honorably discharged in 1953.  After the war, he met his future wife Joyce while working in a commercial bakery in Detroit and attended Wayne State University on the GI Bill. He earned a degree in Industrial Engineering and went on to work in manufacturing management for over 30 years.

Richard is fondly remembered for his “inventory”, a copious collection of tools and “fix-it” parts he maintained in his garage long after he retired; for his cheerful disposition; and for his ability to mangle any joke he retold and make it far funnier for the mangling.

He is survived by his sons, Mike (Karen), Christopher, Dan (Melissa) and daughter Cathy (Dan) Canning as well as seven grandchildren, Josie, Roberto, Luke, Chase, Baylee, David, and Julia. He is preceded in death by his father, Josef; mother, Zofia;  brothers Adolf (Lucy), Teddy; sister Mary (Wally) and his wife of 56 years, Joyce Dubiel.

Burial will be private. Family will host a memorial luncheon on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Quarry’s Edge Condo Clubhouse, 6055 Quarry’s Edge Blvd., Sylvania, OH 43560. Friends and family are welcome to stop in and visit beginning at noon. Lunch will be served at 1:00.
