Phyllis Ann Wilson, age 85, joined her Lord and Savior on March 10, 2025. Born in Burnettsville, Indiana on June 19, 1939, she was the third of four children of Arthur and Josephine Sheets. For most of her childhood, they lived in Monticello, Indiana. She graduated in 1957 from Monticello High School. Phyllis was awarded a $2,000 (full ride) academic scholarship from Alcoa, where Arthur worked. She received her Bachelor of Science degree for Speech and Foreign Language in 1961 from Manchester College. In the summer of 1961 at Indiana Beach, she met her husband, Sam Wilson. They were married in 1962 and had three children, Tammy, Mark, and Shawn. They raised them in Lafayette, Indiana where she enjoyed going to their sporting events and extracurricular activities. She was a leader for cub scouts and helped with girl scouts as well. The family spent many weekends camping and fishing while Phyllis pretended to fish and read her books.
While teaching English at Harrison High School and raising a family, she returned to Purdue University’s summer master’s program. In 1973, she obtained her Master of Arts degree. Phyllis was an active, lifelong member of the Honorary Sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. After 35 years of teaching, she retired, and Sam and Phyllis spent several years as full time RV’ers traveling all over the United States. Once they stopped traveling, they returned to Lafayette. They became members of Sunrise Christian Reformed Church where they made many dear friends, with whom Phyllis loved playing Bingo, Bunko, Dominos and cards, especially Euchre. She was also a group leader for many years with Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). After 59 years of marriage and Sam’s passing, Phyllis moved to Kings Pointe Senior Apartments in Sylvania, Ohio to be near her daughter. There she immediately became a member of Five Lakes Church and became very active in the community. She again joined BSF and became a group leader here as well. She had a way of attracting people with her warm smile, so she made more dear friends in a very short time. Her family jokingly said that her social calendar was fuller than their own.
