Mert was received by her heavenly father on Saturday, March 23, 2024. She went peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by those who love her. Mert had a servant’s heart and exemplified that with her life.
Mert is survived by her husband of 57 years, Homer Lee Smith, daughters, Beth (Michael) Ringle, Kelly (Daniel) Williamson and sons, James Zeigler and Jimmy (Terri) Smith; brothers, Ted and Jerry (Bunny) Metcalf. Grandchildren, Kristin (Chris), Michael, Matt (Jess), Lacey (Nolan), Nicole (Jeff), Erica (Richard), Courtney, Parker, Stacey (Matt), Stephanie (Tony), James (Dana), Jennifer, Rachel and Rebecca (PeggyAnn), and many great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, James and Roberta Metcalf, son, Lee, and brothers, Dick, Rolla, and Tommy.
Mert loved nature, animals and spending time with her family. Some of her most fond childhood memories were spent riding horses with her father, throughout her life she maintained her love for horses and would ride whenever she had the opportunity. She had a nurturing spirit and was a source of strength and comfort for all of those who loved her. We can be at peace knowing that she longed for heaven and the time she would be reunited with her family that preceded her.
Mert’s life reflected Jesus, she lived her life with authenticity, kindness, selflessness and compassion. Tender hearted, a place of comfort and safety, a listening ear that always made time to listen and care are just a few of the things that made her so special to us.
Her smile would light up the room, she had an ability to make others smile and laugh. Mert had a childlike heart, was full of joy and a ray of sunshine to everyone she encountered. We are abundantly blessed to have had her here with us for so long and cherish the memories we made that will allow her spirit to live on in each of us. Thank you to all of those who loved Mert, we ask that you join us in celebrating her life and the impact she made on all of us.
The family would like to thank Elara Hospice for all their kindness and assistance to Mert over the last year and everyone who has supported the family during this difficult time.
