Melissa Ann Schak passed away at Toledo Hospital with family and friends’ support both near and far on July 13th, 2022.
On the 31st of December, 1980 in Shakopee, MN, Melissa was born. Hours into her birthday, she received the anointing of the sick and a family meeting between Melissa’s parents and her medical team occurred. With Melissa being born with spina bifida, the team gave newborn Melissa a poor prognosis/quality of life. Her father asked the team if Melissa would be able to color and watch TV, and if so, that was enough for us! Oh, did Melissa color and oh, did she watch TV. She proved “those doctors” in that room wrong, and while paralyzed from the waist down, she spent 40 plus years watching TV, completing word searches, playing the slots, and chatting with anyone within ear shot.
Her life was never smooth, she had a year of seizures and multiple shunt revisions. In fact, her senior year of high school she had to wear a hat every day to cover her shaved head and head scars. Mom and Dad refused to let her fall behind. They worked with Kissy Lissy the entire time and she graduated on time and rolled herself across the stage to get her diploma from Sylvania Southview, Class of 2000.
She had chronic wounds, osteomyelitis ultimately losing her leg, kidney tubes and a colostomy. Even with all these setbacks, Kissy Lissy always took on the world with her best foot forward. She never once complained about any of her conditions. She never once complained about not being able to walk. If life wasn’t fair, no one ever told Melissa.
Melissa was preceded in death by her father, David Schak, loving grandparents, and numerous family animals she adored.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Lou; siblings, Kathryn, Jeff (Andrea) and Amy and uncles and aunts.
Her life has been filled with joy being brought by her nieces and nephews, Malakai, Maleeah, Alexander, Evelyn, Malayna, Wesley, Calvin, Melohim, and Makenna.
You earned your wings on earth being the loving person you are. Run, skip, wheel or soar Kissy Lissy.
A gathering of family and friends will be held, Friday September 30, 2022 from 10:00 A.M., withl the funeral mass begining at 11:00 A.M. at Little Flower Catholic Parish, 5522 Dorr Street, Toledo, 43615 where mass will be live streamed.
