Mary A. Beham, was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt, friend and quiltmaker.
Mary passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Sunday January 12, 2025, at the age of 97. She was born on June 11, 1927, to the late John E. Condon and Grace M. Linenkugel Condon. Mary, along with her 8 siblings, grew up on the family farm. Throughout her life she would recount fond memories of days spent picking and canning the produce they grew. She was forever proud of her roots.
After graduating from Sylvania Burnham High School, Mary began working as a stenographer and was promoted to executive assistant. During that time, she met her husband, William A. Beham. The two married in 1948 then going on to have four children. Mary stayed home to care for their children, surrounding them with love, care, and humor every day. While raising her family, she also took care of her aging parents. She made it clear, through words and actions, that nothing superseded family.
After raising her family, Mary became a small business owner at the age of 60. In 1987, Mary and three friends became owners of the Quilt Foundry in Maumee, Ohio, selling fabric and quilting supplies, and teaching quilting classes to adults and children. Her two granddaughters were lucky enough to be her favorite students. She proved it’s never too late to follow your passion.
One of the greatest lessons Mary passed on is the importance of living a life dedicated to serving others. Mary used her passion for quilting when, as part of the auxiliary of Sunshine Children’s Home, she served as auction coordinator or chair of Sunshine’s annual quilt auction and bazaar for more than twenty years. In 1985 she was awarded the “Spirit of Sunshine” award. From 1985 to 2004 she served as a Board Member of the Sunshine Children’s Home Foundation. Her hard work guided by a selfless heart helped to raise significant funds and improve countless lives.
Even into her mid-90s, Mary used her sewing skills and resources to help others. She made quilts for disaster victims; COVID masks in 2020; clothing for dolls distributed to children through the Detroit GoodFellows’ Christmas program; and colorful pillowcases to brighten the beds of adults and children through several local agencies. Mary was the consummate example of faith through action.
Mary will be remembered fondly for her irreverent sense of humor, dedication to service, commitment to faith, and unending love for family.
She is survived by her devoted children Mary Jo Kuerten, Patricia Beham (Zenon Colque), William Beham, and Gregory Beham; and her beloved grandchildren Kevin Beham, Isabella Beham (Oscar Leon Nunez), Grace Beham, and Nicolas Beham, and great granddaughter Maria Elena Leon-Beham. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their spouses, and their children and grandchildren, and by close friend Lela Silwester, and close cousins Sue Cox and Kathleen Napierala. In addition to the support and caring she received from those above, in her later years Mary also thrived on maintaining her links to the Linenkugel extended family through periodic gatherings.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband William A. Beham; eight siblings: Kathleen, James, Thomas, Raymond, Doris, Jack, Robert and Donald; and by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Walter and Mary Beham, Rudy and Betty Beham, Paul Silwester and Mary Toth (Raymond) Condon.
Mary’s family would like to offer their deep appreciation to caregivers Korie Brame and Olivia Grillot who provided excellent companionship and care, enabling Mary to stay in her home for her final year. A special acknowledgement is also due to her daughter Mary Jo Kuerten who provided extraordinary companionship and support to Mary for ten years after the death of Mary’s husband, Bill.
