Marilyn Schiermyer Eckhart of Archbold, Ohio, formerly of Toledo and Maumee passed away at 90 years of age on January 20, 2021 after battling Alzheimer’s and severe dementia for the past five years. She was born to Lawrence and Gladys (Edinger) Schiermyer in Toledo, Ohio on December 10, 1930. She grew up in East Toledo and graduated from Waite High School in 1948. Marilyn attended Bowling Green State University and Colorado State University and graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1952 with her degree in Education. She began her teaching career in Dundee Michigan teaching fourth grade from 1952-54. Moving back to Toledo, she taught for Oregon Schools at Clay and Starr schools from 1954-63. Marilyn was on the first faculty at Starr Elementary and a Charter member of the Oregon Education Association. After spending three years at home after the birth of her son Mark, she returned to teaching. Her career was then spent in the Toledo Public Schools from 1966-88. She taught at Old Orchard, Chase, Riverside and Pickett Schools. She taught all grades except first and eighth grades throughout her career. During her last ten years, she taught a Title One Math Lab for 4-6th graders which brought her much happiness and enjoyment. Marilyn was a Charter Member of the Gamma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and an active member of Chapter B of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic and educational organization for women. She was a lifelong member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Toledo Ohio. Marilyn led a Christian life to her fullest. She was a Sunday school and Catechism teacher, Sunday School Intermediate Department Superintendent, member of Church Council, Women of the Church and helped with many Church activities and events over the years. Her greatest enjoyment came with lifting her voice up to the Lord as a Choir member for 25 years, with many of those years singing along side of her sister Carolyn. She loved to travel, entertain, play the organ, cook and play bridge. She belonged to several bridge clubs through the years. Marilyn maintained deep and lasting friendships throughout her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceeded in death by her new born daughter Sue Ellen, sister Carolyn Byers, infant niece Lynn Byers, brother James Schiermyer and former husband H. Elden Eckhart. Also preceding her in death was her childhood and lifelong best friend Patricia Lumm Eckhart, who eventually became her sister-in-law when they married brothers. Surviving is her son Mark Eckhart (Mick Brown) of Archbold Ohio, brother-in-law William Byers, sister-in-law Jacquie Schiermyer, many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Dr. Schwisow and staff for the care throughout the years, in home helpers: Missy and Samantha, Fulton County Senior Center, Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home and Community Health Professionals for their compassionate care as well. Thank you to Christy, Michelle and Amanda who kept Marilyn looking her best, engaged in her surroundings and active over the past several years, allowing her to live independently until March of last year.
