Margaret "Peggy" Packer Obituary

Margaret “Peggy” Ellen Gallant Packer, 67, joined her Lord and Savior on July 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Peggy was born on April 1, 1958, in Brewer, Maine, to John and Irene Gallant. She was the youngest of 5 siblings. During her schooling, she was a proud member of Girl Scouts, where her mother was the troop leader. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1976 where she was a very proud member of the Precisioneers. She also worked as a candy striper at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

She met the love of her life, Edwin Packer, in 1978, getting engaged just 2 weeks later.  After their marriage in 1979, they moved to the Toledo area, where Edwin was originally from. They welcomed their daughter, Amy, in 1989 and Peggy spent the rest of her life as a wonderfully devoted and supportive mother. There was never a time when neither her husband nor daughter weren’t fully supported by Peggy. She covered them in her loving arms, always.

Peggy supported Amy’s teaching career from the very beginning. She loved going in and helping in the classroom doing all sorts of tasks and getting to know the students. She recently claimed the loving title of PeggyPacker (one word) from the St Pius X community.

Peggy had a very large love of animals, always having a house full of pets, showing them extreme love and commitment. 17 years ago, when Ed found a litter of abandoned 3-week-old kittens, Peggy ended up on her hands and knees meowing to capture and save them. While she had homes for all of them, she just couldn’t part with them and kept all of the kittens. Her boys, Moose, Bear, Smokey, and grand cat, Muffin, provided many snuggles, love and laughter to her. She also highly enjoyed her tropical fish tank, often watching her fish swim to find some peace and comfort.

Peggy’s faith was unmatched. She loved singing to the Lord, praising him with a joyful sound, even though she was unable to sing. During her battle with cancer, she continued to hold on to the faith, praising God every single day.

She worked for 40 years at St Luke’s Hospital, both for the hospital itself and for Southwest Anesthesia Services.

Peggy was extremely talented and gifted in many ways. She had a talent for smiling with what her family called her “Hello Face” as well as being extraordinarily talented with crafts, particularly paper crafts. Peggy was a treasured demonstrator and design team member for many paper crafting companies. Her devout love of paper, which she blamed on her father, resulted in her booth at the Thrifty Hippie called Peggy’s Papermill.  One of her many favorite things to do was to spend every third Saturday of the month paper crafting and catching up with her friends and daughter. Peggy was also a very talented photographer. She would more than likely be seen with a camera in her hand, photographing everything she could see. Recently, Peggy took up the dog sport of dock diving with her daughter and her grand dog, Lavender. Her abilities to throw, led Team Lavender to participate in the national championship within their first 6 months of competing. She treasured all of the adventures they went on for competitions across the country, and she loved her dock diving “framily” very much. Peggy was very proud of her throwing abilities and often could be heard saying, “It’s all about the thrower, you know!”

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Irene Gallant; brother Frank Gallant; sister-in-law Helen Ann Gallant; mother and father-in-law, Helen and Sheldon Packer; and brother-in-law Steven Packer. She is survived by her loving husband, Edwin Packer; daughter, Amy Packer; siblings, Bill and Anna Gallant, Jim Gallant and Patricia Craft, Kathy Cheverie, Jody and Robbin Syrek; many loved nieces and nephews; and an abundance of wonderful friends.

Her family would like to thank the nurses and doctors of St. Ann’s hospital that provided exceptional care to her over the last few months. They would also like to thank St. Pius X Catholic Parish and School for their unwavering support and love during this time.

In lieu of flowers, her family is asking for donations to be made to St. Pius X Catholic School – Classroom Library Fund, or to Trinity Lutheran School – Library Fund.
