Leona Cooper, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday September 22, 2024. Leona was born in Bedford Township, Michigan on August 7, 1935 to Ray and Violet Fisher, and grew up in Ottawa Lake, Michigan with her two younger brothers, Ray and Leroy. Her father, Ray, was the first to retire as part of the UAW's 'Under 30 and Out' program. Leona wanted to be in the city, and lived with her aunt and uncle in Toledo while attending Whitmer High School. She graduated in 1953, and later that year married Richard J. Cooper. Together they raised three children, Randy, Tammy, and Rodney, in the north end of Toledo. Leona worked in banking; first at Ohio Citizens Bank, but retired early to take care of her ailing husband. She later returned to the then National City Bank, until retirement. Family was Leona's focus, and she relished having family together, particularly at the holidays. She also worked as a caregiver for Kim and Jeff Larberg, and their children, Derek, Nicholas and Michelle. Leona moved to Novi, Michigan in November 2023 to be closer to family.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (1984), son, Randy (2002), granddaughter, Stephanie (2022), and her brothers, Ray (2013) and Leroy (2012). She is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Garrett) Swart, son, Rodney (Lisa) Cooper, daughter-in-law Kim "Tarsha" Heninger, grandchildren, Andrew "A.J." Swart, Tiffany (Austin) Howard, Angela Cooper, Nicolas Cooper, and great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Aubrey Howard, Bella Arcuri, and Ansley and Amelia Blair.
