John Farber Bowers DVM, age 94, passed away on September 21, 2024. He was born in Canton, Ohio to parents Roscoe and Hilda (Farber) Bowers. After graduating from Canton McKinley High School, John proudly served four years in the US Army. The GI Bill allowed him to enter The Ohio State University where he earned a degree in Veterinary Medicine. It was at OSU that he met Ellen. They were married in 1953 and went on to raise three children. Last December, they celebrated their 70 th anniversary. John and Ellen moved to Toledo in 1959 where John established a small-animal veterinary hospital in West Toledo. He retired in 2004 after caring for many pets for over 45 years. John joined the Masons while serving in the Army at Fort Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. In 2021, he was presented with his 70 th anniversary pin. John served his community in many volunteer positions in Boy Scouts, Pilgrim United Church of Christ (including Moderator) and Sylvania United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Toledo Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA past president), Ohio Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). John is survived by his wife Ellen; daughters Diane (Ken) Allison and Patty (Larry) Detzel; grandchildren Emily Allison (CJ) Jones, Stephen (Ashley) Detzel and Mike (Makayla Dilg) Detzel; great-grandchildren, Bette Jones, Piper Jones and Luke Detzel; sister Carolyn Kronsis; extended family and many friends. John will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He was preceded in death by son John Gary Bowers and parents, Roscoe and Hilda Bowers. Visitation will be held at Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie Street, Sylvania, on Friday, October 18, from 10:30 until noon. A memorial service will immediately follow. The family invites all present to stay for a luncheon following the service. Interment will be private.
