Joanne Strickling Kennedy, age 92, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024, due to complications from a second stroke. She joins her loving husband Roger, who left us just 6 months ago and her youngest child Karen, who succumbed to ovarian cancer 20 years ago. Joanne dedicated her life to serving others, by spreading joy through music, educating young minds, and sharing her many gifts and talents with all who were fortunate to meet her along the way. Joanne was born on November 4, 1931, to George and Marion Strickling in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Her parents instilled in her a love of music and she became an accomplished pianist, violinist, and organist. After graduating with honors from Cleveland Heights High School she continued to pursue music as her major at Ohio Wesleyan University. While there she was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Mu Phi Epsilon, as well as the choir and orchestra. Here she would also meet fellow music major Roger Kennedy who would become her future husband for 70 plus years. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, Joanne began her teaching career at Orange Village Elementary School in Cleveland. Once the family settled in Ottawa Hills following Roger’s new position at the University of Toledo, she earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Joanne then taught second-grade at Wernert Elementary School for 26 years. After her retirement she enjoyed advising student teachers at UT and BGSU as their faculty supervisor. Joanne was not only a dedicated educator, but was also an accomplished musician and hard-working volunteer. For many years, she served as the church organist at Pilgrim Church, Maumee Presbyterian, and Covenant Presbyterian. After moving to Ohio Living Swan Creek, Roger and Joanne continued to spread their love of music with the Swan Creek Singers. At age 88, Joanne became the founder, director, and accompanist for the Alleluia Singers. She enjoyed playing in the bell choir at Epworth United Church, where she was also a Stephen Minister and member of the Women’s Bible Study Group. Joanne was always an active volunteer in her children’s and grandchild’s lives, always willing to lend a hand when and where she could be helpful. In her spare time Joanne enjoyed creating lovely cross stitch gifts for others. She and Roger always loved their travel time together as a family or with friends. Their numerous adventures included visiting dear friends and loved ones in all 50 states and abroad, as well. These were some of their happiest and most memorable times, especially during their retirement years. This beautiful soul lived every second of her incredibly long life, always being mindful to continue serving others throughout all of those years. She will be missed dearly by all who were blessed to know her, especially her sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Richard Fitzgerald; son, Chuck Kennedy; daughter, Sherri Kennedy; granddaughter, Kirsten Cousins; as well as several nieces, grandnieces, nephews, and grandnephews. Please join us for a musical celebration of her life on Friday, February 2, at 10:00 a.m. in the Reed Chapel at Ohio Living Swan Creek. Light refreshments will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the Epworth UMC Handbell Choir, the OLSC Alleluia Singers, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
