Jo Ann Dixon, a beloved matriarch and friend, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Jo Ann was born on February 24, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, to Ira and Cleo Beck. She lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a zest for life. She was a graduate of Libbey High School, where she met her lifelong partner, Virgil Dixon. Together, they shared 56 years of marriage and countless adventures, including extensive travels.
Jo Ann was a dedicated professional, working as a scholarship specialist in the Financial Aid office at the University of Toledo. She was passionate about helping students achieve their educational goals and took great joy in assisting deserving students. Later in life, she and Virgil returned to UT and earned their bachelor’s degrees in 1993, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to education.
A master gardener, Jo Ann found joy in tending her garden and volunteering at the Toledo Botanical Garden. She cherished spending time with her friends and daughters, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren. A lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church, she later attended Olivet Lutheran Church with her daughter, Amy.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Virgil, and brother, James Beck. She is survived by her loving daughters, Sue Kurek and Amy Dixon; grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, and Emily Horst, and Alec (Alicia) Kurek; and great-granddaughter, Cora Kurek.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to special friends Betty Morrin, Tenley Petersen, and Beth Solo, as well as the compassionate caregivers at Ohio Home and Hospice, especially Chrissy King, RN, and caregiver Misty Griswold.
A celebration of Jo Ann’s life will be held at Olivet Lutheran Church, 5840 Monroe St., Sylvania, Ohio, on December 7th. Visitation will take place from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM.
