James Richard Strick Jr. (“Jim,” “Oreg”), 65, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026, from ALS.
Born June 27, 1960, in Toledo, Ohio, to Gerrie and James Strick, Jim grew up in Point Place and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1978. He played baseball and basketball, served as senior class vice-president, attended the University of Toledo, and was a member of St. Joseph Sylvania Church.
He built a career across JCPenney—where he was the unquestioned king of fitting shoes—Midwest Fluid Power in sales, and later in IT, retiring from the Sisters of St. Francis.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Julie (Dunlap); his daughters, Miranda (Jenna Moszkowicz), Elizabeth, and Kelly (Matthew Jahns); his siblings, Cheryl Toska, Michelle Strick, Paul Strick, Jackie Strick, and Madelyn Rawson; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews; and, most importantly, his granddaughters, Kennedy James and Faye Marie. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim was quick-witted, smart, funny, and steady in a way that didn’t ask for attention. He loved Notre Dame football, the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and the Raiders—back when they were still Oakland. He watched Seinfeld, Perry Mason, and James Bond on repeat. He liked a good cup of coffee, a campfire, and quiet more than noise.
But that’s not really it.
He showed up.
Every game. Every event. Every time it mattered for his daughters. No shortcuts, no excuses. Just there.
He wasn’t loud about love. He didn’t need to be. It showed up in things that stuck—chocolate cake for breakfast, fully committing to a Harry Potter party, and house rules that made no sense to anyone else but somehow worked anyway. “Don’t be a weenie on TV” was one of them.
He had weak ankles. He’d admit that. Everything else about him was steady.
He hit a lifelong goal becoming an usher at Notre Dame football games, and he held onto that with pride. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Visitation will be held at Reeb Funeral Home in Sylvania on Wednesday, May 6, from 4:00–8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Wear your Notre Dame game day clothes. He would’ve liked that.
A Mass will be held Thursday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania.
Jim will be cremated and return home.
