Helen “Joyce” Goodyear, age 94, of Toledo, joined her beloved husband Jim in her heavenly resting place on September 11, 2025 while under the care of Hospice. She was born in Toledo in 1930 to Cordell and Edna Massey. Joyce was a graduate of Waite High School and then went to earn her degree in Education from the University of Toledo in 1952 while a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She taught kindergarten at Garfield Elementary School in East Toledo and later preschool in both Toledo and Sylvania. Joyce was very proud of the accomplishments of her former students and enjoyed following their academic and professional achievements.
Joyce married Jim Goodyear in 1959. Jim and Joyce met when they were both students at the University of Toledo. They enjoyed a large group of friends and owned the Alpine Ski Store in West Toledo to share their passion for snow skiing. Jim passed away in 1981, after which Joyce continued to raise their children, Julie and Bill, with strength and dedication. Joyce loved and was very involved with her children and grandchildren. Her life pillars were faith, family and friends and her love for these three were strong and unwavering.
Joyce was a 45-year member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She served the church as a Sunday School teacher, Stephen Minister, and prayer group leader. Her long-term friendships with fellow church members brought her great joy as she treasured the spent together volunteering within the church and studying the word of the Bible.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Julie (Mike) Murphy and Bill (Cristina) Goodyear, and by her five grandchildren, Tyler (Katelynn) Murphy, Mikayla Murphy (fiancée Tyler Sirut), Emily, Jimmy, and Elizabeth Goodyear, as well as two great- grandchildren, Henry and Hayden Murphy. She is also survived by her siblings, Brenda, David, and Lynn, and was preceded in death by her sister, Joanne
Many thanks to her family, friends, neighbors, and church members who continued their fellowship with Joyce as her journey to heaven progressed. Your love and prayers will forever
be remembered and appreciated. We would also like to acknowledge the loving and patient care provided by the staff of Otterbein Sunset Village- including her favorites Steve, Tracy and Andrea.
