Gerald Alan ((Jerry)) Sobb

Gerald Sobb (Jerry), age 76, of Monclova, Ohio, passed away on Friday, June 21st, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family. 

Jerry was born to Alfred and Julia Sobb in Toledo, Ohio on July 5, 1947. Jerry attended Gesu Grade School and DeVilbiss High School where he played basketball for 4 years. Shortly after graduating from DeVilbiss Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy, in December 1966, and served in the Navy until 1970, attaining the rank of Petty Officer 2d Class E-S. After the Navy, Jerry attended The University of Toledo, graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice.

Jerry began his career in law enforcement in 1972 with the City of Sylvania Police Department where he served for over 38 years. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1977, appointed Chief of Police in 1984, and was also appointed as the Director of Public Safety in 1986. Jerry served as the Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety until his retirement in 2010.

During his time with the Sylvania Police Department Jerry received 2 Department Police Star Awards and a Meritorious Service Award. He received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Toledo Lucas County Safety Council at the Hero Awards Banquet in 1976..."for life saving assistance during a fire at 5679 Monroe St on April 7, 1974".

Chief Sobb served on many Boards, Committees, and Associations: Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, The International Association of Chiefs of Police, The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, Chairman of the Law Enforcement Board 1986 - 1995, and the Law Enforcement Boards at Lourdes University, University of Toledo, and Owens Community College. Chief Sobb assisted in the development of the Law Enforcement Degree Program at Lourdes University and became an instructor in the program for 16 years until he retired in 2010.

Jerry married Jane Geisler on May 19, 1975 and together they raised 3 sons: Brian (Lisa), Michael (Jessica), and Mark (Christy) and have 5 grandchildren: Conrad, Jolie, Dylan, Brodi, and Evelyn. Jerry had 4 brothers: Robert (Jan), Alfred (Kathleen), Paul, and Andrew and many nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Julia, and brother Andrew.

Always most important in Jerry's life was Jane and their family. Jerry absolutely loved playing with the grandkids and getting together with his 3 sons and families who were the center of his life. He enjoyed playing golf and loved the family vacations to Hilton Head Island as well as the cruises he and Jane went on with friends.

Visitation will be on Monday, July 1st at Reeb Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a private service at on Tuesday, July 2nd, followed immediately by interment in the Toledo Memorial Park 911 Memorial. Friends and community members are welcome at the interment at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family would like memorial contributions to be made to the Sylvania Fraternal Order of Police Benevolent Fund, mail to Sylvania Police FOP #129 attn: Treasurer, 6635 Maplewood Ave, Sylvania 43560
