Fred passed away Saturday November 30, 2024, at the age of 89 while under hospice care at Kingston of Sylvania with his loving wife at his side.
Fred was born August 23, 1935, to Alex and Rose Cohen in, Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1953 and went on to graduate from the University of Toledo in 1958 with a Bachelor of Education degree. Fred then started working for Toledo Public Schools at Hamilton/Leverette teaching Social Studies and Physical Education. He relished his teaching position for 35 years. At the age of 23, he became the basketball coach for nine years coaching over 179 gifted athletes from 1958 – 1967. During his tenure, his team’s record was 125-5 with a 71 consecutive winning streak that was, at the time, a national record. Fred loved sports but he loved coaching even more. He also coached women’s volleyball and track at Woodward High School for six years. In his younger years, he played all-star softball and played the first game under the lights at the Lucas County Rec Center in 1969. He also umpired baseball games for many years. He was honored to be inducted into the Toledo Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 and in 2004, was honored at the Stickney Reunion for his contribution to the community. Fred faithfully served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 3 years.
Fred is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan, sons, Michael (Susan) and Mark (Mary) Cohen, sister Susann (Bob) Greenberg, 2 nieces and a nephew, stepdaughters, Renee (Rob) Simon, and Jackie (Andy) White as well as 4 step grandchildren whom he treated as his own. He leaves behind many friends who shared his love of football, golf and Las Vegas, especially Kevin Collier and Dave Roberts.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Toledo Humane Society. Interment was private. A celebration of life will be held January 4, 2025. Online condolences to reebfuneralhome.com
