Florence Louise Hood, age 88, went to be with the Lord on September 18, 2021. Florence was the beloved wife of Norman Hood to whom she was married for 35 years. Florence was not only his wife but also his main caregiver in Norman’s final years and she took care of him beautifully.
Florence was born in Monroe County, MI, October 28, 1932, and grew up in Sylvania, OH. She attended Hillview Elementary and graduated from Burnham High School. Florence continued her education at Fort Wayne Bible College. She followed her education with an eclectic career. She modeled for Patricia Stevens Finishing School for Models, worked in the business office of The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and was a Comptometer operator. Florence then became mother to Andrea and Anita, her two daughters.
Florence had a wide variety of interests. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, Sylvania, Ohio. She was a member of the Hillview Mother’s Club, a Hillview Brownie Scout leader, and a Vacation Bible School teacher. Florence also was a member of the Red Hat Society of First Christian Church, Alexis Garden chapter and the 50’s Dinner Club. She loved working with her hands and knitted afghans, made clothes for loved ones and was an avid seamstress and crafter.
Florence always had a smile on her face that lit up a room. She made many friends who became extended family to her, several of whom called her, “mom”. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Norman Andrew Hood, Jr.; her mother, Margaret Elizabeth Borer Russell; her father, Antel Astalos; her stepfather Richard Grafton Russell, Sr.; her sisters, Marilyn Compton-Keck, Marjorie A. Roberts; Sister-in-law Phyllis Poturalski.
Florence is survived by her daughters, Andrea J. (the late Paul) Myers, Anita (John) Montavon; her grandchildren, Tim Murphy, Melissa Murphy, Jeremy (Julia) Miller, Shandi (Alfred) Fischer, Samuel Myers; and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Richard Grafton Russell, Jr. (Lisa Austin), Raymond Louis Smith (Mary Rose); brother-in-law, Joseph Poturalski; and Goddaughter Doreen Compton Slater; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday, October 15, 2021 at First Christian Church, 5271 Alexis Rd., Sylvania, OH 43560. Visitation is from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. with the service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Toledo Memorial Park.
