Elaine (Gates) Hanes

Dedicated mother, grandma, and friend, Elaine Hanes, 90, of Sylvania, OH, passed away after a long illness on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at the Grove. She was born April 12, 1931, in Grand Rapids to parents Grant H. and Marion P. (Howard) Gates. Elaine was born the second daughter in an eclectic family.  Her early years forged her desire to be an upstanding, hardworking, compassionate lady.  As a hardworking waitress she met her husband and became an upstanding wife and mother.  She was self taught in the arts of sewing, cooking and homemaking.  After raising a large family Elaine returned to school for her nursing degree and proceeded to impact lives and created life long friendships working at St. Luke’s Hospital on three east a medical surgical floor.  Elaine helped raise and enjoyed playing with numerous grandchildren by whom she was affectionately dubbed grandma grandma.  She never lost her love of sewing, she not only created her youngest daughter's wedding dress but many other treasured items such as halloween costumes, christening gowns, quilts, doll clothes and many more.  Elaine also had a passion for travel visiting family but also journeying as far away as Australia. Elaine was a conundrum in that she was a fierce rule follower but also a risk taker.  She leaves behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who carry on her tradition of fierce compassion.

She is survived by her daughters Deb Pasch, Sandra (Scott) Schaub, and Annette (Tom) Roberson; sons Tim (Audrey), Bill and Bob Hanes; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brothers Dan and Jim Osterhout. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband Jack C. Hanes; sister Phyllis Van Till; sons in law Jim Pasch and Denny Kitchen; and daughter in law Kathy Anderson.

Friends and family may gather at the Reeb Funeral Home 5712 N. Main St. Sylvania, OH, Saturday. May 8th from 11:00 AM until the Funeral Ceremony begins at 1:00 PM.
