Doris Stone went to her heavenly home on March 5, 2025, just 17 days before her 102nd
birthday. Born in Toledo on March 22, 1923 to Clarence and Mabel Weitz. She grew up
in South Toledo and enjoyed hosting family and friends at the family cottage on Dewey
Lake in the Irish Hills.
Following graduation from Libbey High School, Doris attended Fenn College (Cleveland
State). Living during the depression and WWII shaped her values and activities growing
up. She was the first female board marker at Collin Norton Stock Exchange, worked in
the personnel department of Lamson’s Department Store and taught nursery school and
played the piano at Olivet Christian Nursery School for 13 years.
She met Major Glenn D. Stone on a blind date, and they married on August 10, 1946.
They were married 62 years until Glenn’s passing. Together they enjoyed traveling
which included Hawaii, Alaska, many cruises, Panama Canal, Nova Scotia and many
other destinations. Their favorite areas with family and friends were Northern Michigan
and the Colorado area.
Keeping active and involved in life with numerous friends was her clue to a long life.
She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, Ladies Oriental Shrine
Dendarah Court, P’Takist of the Shrine, Flower Hospital Auxiliary for 25 years and a
charter “Frog Lady”, Zenobia Shrine activities and square dance club, Carousel Dance
Club, St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary, Red Hot Hatters of Waterside, Sylvania Country Club
and the Sylvania Garden Club. Dancing, playing in numerous bridge groups, bowling,
boating, bunco, bingo, symphony concerts, water aerobics, Michigan games and even a
little tennis and cross-country skiing kept her going.
Her love for animals, nature, flowers and sitting by the lake was a highlight for her. She
had numerous dogs, cats, and horses but also over the years she also had rabbits,
ducks, snails, birds, a salamander and a turtle.
