David V Spitler

David V. Spitler, age 58, died unexpectedly on August 18, 2019, in Kingshill, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, his home for the past 10 years. Born in Toledo on November 27, 1960, youngest of 4 children of Clement (Buck) and Mary (Roseborough) Spitler, David attended Reformation Lutheran Church and Wernert Elementary. After Whitmer, class of ’79, he served in the Marine Corps in Okinawa and the Philippines. Back in Toledo he held various construction jobs until moving to St. Croix to lay ceramic tile. In recent years he took great pride in working for the Caravelle Hotel on St. Croix, where he was a very valued employee.

David was a gentle giant, protective of family, friends, and his many rescue dogs. His children were most important to him. Also dear were times spent at his parents’ cottage at Sweezey Lake, near Brooklyn, Michigan, enjoying family, good friends, hunting and fishing. On St. Croix David loved swimming in the ocean and an “occasional” rum & coke.

David was preceded in death by his parents. Those he left much too soon are his wife Linda, daughter Kristy Spitler, son Rob (Dani) Madden; sisters Kathleen (Bill) Manley, Mary (Ralph) Matzinger, brother Charles Spitler; nephew Ian; nieces Margaret, Elizabeth, and Carolyn; life-long friends Nancy MacKinnon Lockard and Mike Hamann; and friends Patty, Scott & Pam.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 23, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2770 W. Central; visitation at 10 a.m., services at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s or Toledo Animal Rescue.

David was a loving soul, and is deeply missed.
