David Simon Sylvester Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Simon Sylvester, who passed away suddenly at home on March 22, 2026, at the age of 77.

David was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, where he spent his entire life. He graduated from Sylvania Northview High School and went on to build a remarkable 50-year career as a heavy equipment operator. He spent many years with Geddis Paving & Excavating before continuing his career with Rudolph Libbe, where he worked for nearly 30 years, remaining dedicated to his work up until his passing. In June 2025, he was proudly recognized with his 50-year service award from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 — a testament to his dedication and strong work ethic.

A man of many talents, David could build or fix just about anything. From rebuilding car engines and custom-making three-wheelers to building porches and working with his hands, he took pride in being capable and self-reliant. From a young age, he had a lifelong passion for cars — spending time drag racing in his early years and carrying that love throughout his life, always enjoying watching car racing. He also had a deep love for the outdoors and animals, a passion that began in his childhood on Shetland Road, where he grew up surrounded by horses, cows, and chickens. Later in life, he continued that love by caring for animals and feeding the deer that visited his backyard.

Above all, David was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His pride and joy were his family, and he cherished every moment spent with his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who made him feel truly special. He will be remembered as a simple man who found happiness in life’s quiet moments — especially evenings spent on the back porch with coffee and cookies, watching the birds and enjoying conversation.

David shared a unique and enduring bond with Sue Sylvester, his partner of 59 years — as husband, friend, and companion. No matter the path their relationship took, they remained deeply connected and never went a single day without speaking — a reflection of a love that stood the test of time.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Louann Beier, mother of Kayla (Sari), Drew, Haley, Frederick, and Brock; and Brandy Ortencio (Derrick), mother of Federico and Madeline; and by his great-grandchildren, Zain, Zahir, and Zayana, children of Kayla. He is also survived by his sister, Diane; his niece, Carrie, and nephew, Trevor (children of Diane); and his nephews, Simon and Matt (sons of his late brother Tony), along with many extended family members, to whom he was a caring and cherished uncle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Luella Sylvester; his brother, Tony; and his nephews, Tony and Steven. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main St., Sylvania, OH 43560. Light refreshments will be provided.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Reeb Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Toledo Memorial Park and Mausoleum, 6382 Monroe Street, Sylvania, OH. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

David will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
