Bernard Goetz peacefully passed away on November 1, 2023. He was born in Riga, Michigan on March 13, 1934 to the late Raymond and Irene (Ahleman) Goetz. A devoted husband, loving father, and pillar of his community, Bernard led a life steeped in dedication, compassion, and hard work.
Bernard graduated from Blissfield High School in 1951 and found eternal love with Anna Bick, whom he married on February 6, 1954, in Toledo, Ohio. Together, they built a life rooted in the land, as Bernard was a lifelong farmer in Ottawa Lake, tending to cattle and harvesting grain. His legacy as a nurturing father is best encapsulated by his children's testament: "he gave us the best life on the farm."
His commitment extended far beyond his family and farm. Bernard selflessly served his community for 50 years as a volunteer fireman, president of the Ottawa Lake Co-Op, a dedicated deacon at Zion Lutheran Church, and a respected member of the Whiteford Township Board. He leaves behind an indelible impact on those he served.
A passionate supporter of the Michigan Wolverines, his loyalty to the Maize and Blue only surpassed by the immense joy Bernard found in championing his grandchildren at their school and sporting events. His unwavering encouragement often saw him traveling great distances, showing his boundless love and support.
Bernard found pleasure in traveling, especially with friends, relishing memorable moments in places like Alaska and Hawaii. Known for his strength, faithfulness, loyalty, kindness, and strong work ethic, he was a man who adored his family and cherished moments of joy.
Bernard is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Anna, his four children, Deborah (Jim) Russell, Brenda (John) Nieman, Bernie (Colleen) Goetz, and John (Trayce) Goetz, as well as his brothers Kenneth (Janet) Goetz and Wayne (Carolyn) Goetz . He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren Kim (Jeremy) Wilson, Kristy (Mike) Hoffman, Brad (Lisa) Russell, Matt (Sarah) Nieman, Dan (Rebekah) Nieman, Renee (Cody) Grove, Lauren (Nate) Burnett , Shane Goetz, Delaney Goetz, Haley (Jake) Fejes, Madison Goetz, Caiden Farrell, Cael Farrell, and 12 great-grandchildren and one more on the way. Brother in law Joe (Barbara Jane) Bick and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, sister in laws Sister Mary Vernon Bick and Ginny (Cato) Gottschalk.
Bernard Goetz's legacy of kindness, hard work, and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. His memory will be cherished and honored by all who were touched by his remarkable life. Michigan services will be forthcoming at a later time.
