Xenophon James Koinis

Xenophon James (“Xenny”) Koinis, 85, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on  April 5, 2017. Born on August 29, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio, he was the  youngest of six sons of the late Pauline and James Koinis. 

Xenny attended Scott High School and worked with his father and  brothers on the family popcorn wagon, making and selling caramel corn  and sugared peanuts. During the Korean War, he served in the United  States Air Force from 1950 to 1954, stationed at Williams Air Force Base in  Chandler, Arizona. Xenny enjoyed a lifelong love of flying and sharing  stories of his time as a pilot.  Upon completion of his service to our country, he graduated from the  University of Toledo. Xenny worked as a mechanical engineer for 20 years  at Dana Corporation in Toledo and and for a time after the family moved  to Charlotte in 1977. He enjoyed playing golf and visiting with family and  friends. All who knew him will always remember his beaming smile. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Frank,  Raymond, and Christopher. 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eftilia, and two children, Sophia  Koinis Hazlehurst (Yates) of Charlotte, NC and Theodore X. Koinis (Pauline)  of Pearland, TX as well as six grandchildren, April (David) Roberts,  Catherine (Jeff) Whittaker, Sarah (Gregory) Poole, Anastasia Koinis, James  (Valerie) Koinis and Nicholas Koinis. His greatest joy came from his six  great-grandchildren, Hazel, Emma, Yates, Margot, Louise and Hugh. He is  also survived by his brothers, William (Patricia) Koinis of Madison, GA and  John Koinis of Novi, MI, and many loving nieces and nephews.  

He was an active member of Saint Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church and could frequently be found walking and visiting with friends at the Siskey  YMCA. People loved his delicious sugared peanuts and caramel corn, which he thoroughly enjoyed making from his family’s secret recipe.   

The family will receive friends at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, Charlotte, NC, on Friday, April 7, beginning at 6 p.m. The Trisagion Prayer  Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Kenneth W. Poe Funeral Services are providing arrangements.  

Visitation will be offered on Sunday, April 9, at Reeb Funeral Home,  Sylvania, Ohio, from 5 - 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Holy  Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Toledo, Ohio, on Monday, April 10, at 10  a.m. with interment to follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Reeb Funeral  Home is handling arrangements. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Saint Nektarios  Greek Orthodox Church (Charlotte), Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox  Cathedral (Toledo), Levine Cancer Center, or Hospice & Palliative  Care-Charlotte Region.  

The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff  members at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX), Levine Cancer  Center (Charlotte, NC), Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, and  Hospice & Palliative Care-Charlotte Region for their kind and caring  treatment of Xenny as he courageously battled cancer.
