Roger J. Baker, “Doc” was born in Toledo, Ohio to Roger M. and Roma Jones Baker.   He grew up in the Village of Lathrup, near Detroit.   Roger attended The University of Illinois for undergraduate school, and The Loyola School of Dentistry graduating in 1954.   He was stationed in the Brooklyn Naval Yards as a Navy dentist from 1954 – 1956.

Roger married Virginia Hook January 22, 1955.  They would be celebrating 63 years of marriage this year.  After finishing his Navy service, they moved to Toledo, Ohio where he started his dental practice.  Roger practiced dentistry in Toledo for over 50 years.  He always had a new joke for his patients, and was, in fact, the dentist that would ask a question when he had his hands in your mouth!

He had many outside interests that included; volunteering at the Toledo Zoo, sailing on Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico.  He was a Mason for 50 years, and recently received his 50 year membership award.  Roger loved Sanibel Island, Florida. He was especially proud of discovering paradise in the 1970’s.  Rog was a runner before it was “cool”. Roger and Ginny were long time supporters of the University of Toledo Lady Rocket’s basketball team.  He was a long-time member of Christ Presbyterian Church.

His grandchildren remember his quizzing them on historical facts, flying kites on the Sanibel beach, Hobie and Sunfish rides, the Valhalla (his sailboat) and all the learning experiences he opened up for them.

Roger is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Virginia.  Children; Jane (Joseph) O’Bryan of Granger, Indiana, Sally (Ron) Davis of Perrysburg, Ohio, Roger (Sheila) Baker of Sylvania Ohio,  and his sister Linda Murphy of Waterville Ohio, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 North Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio on Friday, January 12 from 4 – 7 PM.  Memorial service on Saturday, January 13 at 11:00 AM at Christ Presbyterian Church 4225 West Sylvania Ave. with luncheon to follow.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Franciscan Care Center, and Promedica Hospice for their loving care of Roger.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Alzheimer’s Association or Christ Presbyterian Church.
