James Richard Charvat, 89, of Toledo, OH, passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, at The Toledo Hospital. Jim was born in Toledo, July 21, 1928, to parents Charles and Irma (Miller) Charvat, and they preceded him in death.  Jim was a 1946 Graduate of Devilbiss High School. He continued his education at the University of Toledo where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1951.  Upon graduating from college his country called and Jim proudly served in the United States Army as part of the Corps of Engineers during the Korean War.  Upon being released from active duty Jim began his career with The Ohio Department of Transportation becoming a Licensed Professional Engineer in 1957.  Jim spent more than 42 years with the Ohio Department of Transportation retiring from ODOT as District Design Engineer. During that time, Jim was involved with the design and construction of portions of the US Interstate System which runs through Northwest Ohio. After retirement Jim served as a consultant with Feller Finch.

While bowling with friends in 1954 Jim was introduced to Barbara Enck. They married in 1956 and spent 61 wonderful years together.

A man of faith, Jim was a Life Long Member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Toledo. While at Grace he served many terms on the Church Council, 4 as President, and worked diligently on many committees over the years.

He was an avid collector; he collected Beer and Coca-Cola memorabilia along with an extensive display of Christmas Village items. More recently he has been a frequent contributor to the Bend of The River Magazine sharing photos and reminisces about growing up in Toledo.

Jim and his family enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach visiting over 30 times along with annual trips to Northern Michigan which will always be remembered.
