Edbert Anton Karcher, 84, of Sylvania passed away December 8, 2018 at Ebeid Hospice of Sylvania, OH after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born February 27, 1934 in Toledo, OH to German immigrant parents, Ferdinand and Flora Karcher. Ed married Shirley Davis in 1962 and together they raised four children.
Ed graduated from Macomber High School in 1952 with a degree in electronics and enlisted in the US Army from 1956 until 1958 as a helicopter mechanic. He was a self-made successful businessman, with one of his first jobs being delivering men’s suits made by his tailor father, by bicycle to the downtown shop of Fromme & Sons. Ed founded and operated S & S Control and Systems and Specialty Companies since 1965, reluctantly retiring in 2015 due to his illness. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sylvania and the Electro Club of Toledo.
His passions were his work and family, allowing only a break in February to spend time with Shirley in Aruba. He enjoyed family gatherings, gardening and hosting hobo dinners around the family pool. Ed was a proud and incredibly generous husband, father and grandfather.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; children, Kelley (Steve) Messinger, Krista (Tom) McCrory, Karen (Keith) Tidd, Ken (Susan) Karcher; grandchildren, Jillian, Mackenzie and Jacob McCrory, Maxwell and Julia Messinger, Kendal and Elliott Karcher; and brother, Gerald (Laurel) Karcher. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lydia Rooks.
The family would like to thank the nurses at Ebeid Hospice, the staff of Oakleaf Village and Comfort Keepers for their care and kindness shown to him over these past few years.
Visitation will be at Reeb Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 from 3pm until 8pm. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Sylvania on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 10am.
