Daniel (Dan) Clinton Seemann 88, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018 at his home in Sylvania, Ohio surrounded by his family. He was born on April 29, 1930 in Walbridge, Ohio to Daniel H. and Bess (Sheridan) Seemann. Dan grew up in East Toledo with two brothers and two sisters and graduated from Waite High School in 1948. While at Waite, he excelled in school and athletics playing football, basketball and track. Dan was All-City in basketball and decided to continue his education and basketball at Columbia University in New York City.While at Columbia, he met the love of his life Rosemary. Dan and Rose were married following his graduation from Columbia in 1952. Shortly thereafter, he was deployed to Korea while in the United States Marine Corps. In Korea, he monitored air traffic control over the western Pacific area. After his deployment, Dan settled in the Toledo area to start his career and family.
Following a brief career in business, he decided to resume his education and pursue his Master’s degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Toledo. This started at forty year career at the University of Toledo. As Director of Student Activities, he enjoyed working with the students to provide opportunities for them to enrich their lives with leadership experiences. In 1980 he completed his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and continued his career as a professor teaching psychology classes for many years. In addition, Dan served on the Board of Athletic Control for several years. He also initiated a mentoring program for athletes to assist in the rigors of academia while competing. At one time he was also involved with a suicide prevention and counseling program. For over 20 years, Dan also provided research for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association.
Dan remained in the Marine Corps Reserve for many years attaining the rank of Colonel. He was very proud of his military service and maintained many loyal friends from the Marines. In Dan’s later years, he utilized his life experiences for many fellow service men and women who were suffering from post-traumatic stress.
Dan has been inducted to the Waite High School;, Toledo City and the Columbia University Halls of Fame.
Dan had a life-long love of music and playing the bass. He and several friends founded The Dan Seemann Quintet and played gigs around the Toledo area for years.
Dan’s most cherished passions were Rosie and family. Time spent at the many family athletic events, vacations and neighborhood activities over the years were very special to Dan.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary, his parents Dan and Bess, his older sibs Bob (Pat) Seemann and Patti (Bob) Jones. He is survived by his brother John (Carol) and sister Joan (Lee) Gannon. He is also survived by children Jeff (Nadine), Greg (Mary), Mitch (Sharon) and Anne (Don) Hammersmith. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews as well as grandchildren Kelly, Mike, Erin (Andy), Dan, John, Greg, Jackie (Chris), Amanda, Mallory, Lauren, Natalie, and Molly. Also surviving are great-grandchildren Carson, Vaughn and, Maeve.
The family would like to thank Trina and the staff of Right at Home and Ohio Living Hospice for their professionalism and skill during Dan’s last month. They did a wonderful job.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 9, at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 North Main Street in Sylvania, Ohio from 12:00-4:00 PM with a Memorial Service beginning at 4PM.
