David R. Spitznaugle, age 91, of Sylvania Township, Ohio passed away, Friday, December 21, 2018. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to parents, Ida M. (Martin) and David A. Spitznaugle. He was a member of the Ottawa Hills High School undefeated football team of 1945 where he was known as Spitz and graduated in 1946. He attended Ohio Wesylan University in 1946 and transferred to University of Detroit earning a B.S. in Architectural Engineering with honors and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduation David spent many years building homes and small commercial buildings in the family business which he continued after the death of his father. He married the love of his life Shirley Norine Joslin in June 1950 and shared many years, sailing and cycling in the summers and skiing in the winters. He was active with the American Youth Hostels canoeing, cycling and hiking. He is survived by children, Sharon, Sandra (Bill) Powers, Margaret (Jim) Sterling, Judith (Dan) Mayo and John (Connie); grandchildren Stacy, Ashley, Sarah, Jennifer and Alexander and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife Shirley; grandson Kristopher and two sisters. The family would like to thank the staff at The Grove and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Family and friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main Street, Sylvania, OH on Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 3pm until 8pm. The funeral service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W. Central Ave., Toledo, OH on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11am with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may consider Alzheimer’s Association or Epworth Methodist Church.
