Catherine Glase Obituary

Catherine Damico Glase, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 1st  She was born June 23, 1924, the daughter of John and Julia Damico of Sylvania. She was a graduate of Burnham High School in Sylvania, Ohio.  She attended Mary Manse College and graduated from Mount St. Joseph College, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she studied English and Physical education. She married fellow Burnham High graduate James Glase in 1947. They were married 66 years when he passed away in 2013.

Catherine was an early advocate for physical education. Her children fondly recall the entire family participating in daily games of volley ball, basketball, whiffle ball, and even touch football in the snow which was always followed by hot chocolate made by mom. Her pride and joy were her eight children, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her fun loving husband. She loved to play Euchre with her family, and Bridge with her friends. She was well known for delicious Italian food and feeding anyone that came to the house.

From the 1950’s to the early 70’s she taught Physical Education at Lourdes St Claire Academy when it was still a convent for young women studying to become nuns. She regularly brought students home for dinner with her family. The Sisters also welcomed and encouraged Catherine’s children to visit and play at the school. She was a regular substitute teacher of both English and Physical Education at Sylvania High School, where her husband Jim was Athletic Director. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s she tutored students at home who needed help in order to graduate from high school. She then went on to teach Physical Education on a volunteer basis at Little Flower Elementary School, where she was a member of the parish. This eventually led to a full time Physical Education teaching position. She then became Little Flower’s full time Athletic Director where she was also very active in youth sports.

Catherine is survived by her children, James (Jean), John (Lesley), Jeff, Joan (Rocky) Pinciotti, Joe (Connie), Jan (Walt) Bockert, Judy (Cliff) Williams, Jay (Cindy), sixteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by sisters, Virginia and Evelyn, and brother Carl.
