Al passed away at his home in Sylvania on Saturday, August 4, 2018. He was born July 25, 1928 in Willoughby, Ohio to the late Lucille and Alfred Hawk. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hilda; sons, Brad of Whitehouse and Brent, of Maumee and Boynton Beach, Florida; sister, Pat Smith of Worthington; niece, Mallory Smith, nephews Rob and Randy Smith, and brothers-in-law, John Rhoads (Francis), and Dr. Dick Rhoads (Marjorie), and their daughter Wendy (Weirer) and son Johnny.
Al grew up in Athens, Ohio and Chillicothe, graduating from Chillicothe High School in 1946 where he was an all-league receiver for the football team. He received a mechanical engineering degree from OSU’s College of Engineering following service in the U.S. Marine Corps, First Division. He received his training in Paris Island and was stationed in China.
He served as a PPG Plant Engineer in Barberton, Ohio and Maintenance Engineer for Dundee, Cement, Dundee, MI and conducted seminars on plant maintenance for TAC Holcomb, LLC’s worldwide operations. He was co-owner of Riceland Golf Course, Orville, Ohio, which he purchased in 1962 with his mother and father-in-law and brother-in-law. After Dundee he purchased Standard Roofing in Tiffin in 1981. He purchased Valleywood Golf Club with his family in 2013. He was very active in the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and greatly enjoyed extensive traveling with his wife throughout the United States and to many countries abroad, visiting every continent.
A gathering will be held from 2-6:00 P.M. Thursday, August 9, at Reeb Funeral Home, Sylvania, Ohio, where the memorial service will be held at 6:00 P.M. A memorial lunch will be held Friday, August 10, 2018, 12:00 P.M. at Valleywood Golf Club, 13502 Airport Highway, Swanton, Ohio 43558.
