Orton Samuel Ryan Sr.

Orton Samuel Ryan Sr., age 85 of Sylvania, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016 surrounded by his family.  He was born April 8, 1931 to Orton and Ruth (Ostrander) Ryan in Republic, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Scott High School with the great class of 1949.  In 1951 he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force.  He served in England with the 3rd A.F. and SAC. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1955.  He graduated from the University of Toledo in 1959 with a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education, and a Masters of Education in 1962.June 29,1957 he married Joan Blessing. They just celebrated 59 years of marriage and are blessed with five children. Orton began a 34-year teaching career at his alma mater in 1959. The 1965 Scottonian yearbook was dedicated to him.  He transferred to McTigue Junior High School in 1968 from which he retired in 1993.  He enjoyed coaching cross-country at Scott in 1959, and track and field in 1960-66.  They won the City Championships, DeVilbiss Relays, and Districts.  After coaching, he officiated both cross-country and track meets at junior, senior, and college levels, for 24 years.  After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the US and England.  He enjoyed gardening and took pride in maintaining his home. He is survived by his loving wife Joan, children, Kathleen (Ray) Roberts,  Orton Jr. (Pamela) Ryan, Jennifer Ryan, James Ryan, and Richard (Amy Koperski) Ryan,  his grandchildren, Lorelei, Alexandria, Zachary, Sherry, Julia, and Samantha. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ruth Ryan. 

Friends and family may visit at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main St., Sylvania, Ohio, on Sunday, August 14th, from 3pm to 8pm with funeral services following on Monday, August 15th at 11:00am.  Interment will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
