Charles Eugene Schott passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 in Toledo, Ohio.  He was born on May 9, 1931 in Bellevue, Ohio, to Justus Charles and Lillian Marguerite (Hager) Schott.  He married Patricia Jean Wright in June 1957.  She passed away in November 1987.  He then married Nancy Joyce Brown in August 1989.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 28 years, Nancy Brown-Schott; Children: Ann (Jack) Lundquest, Susan (Kevin) Shammo, Charlie (Lisa) Schott, Peggy Schott, Chris (Susan) Brown; Grandchildren: Jeremy, Brian, Aaron, Isaiah, Grace, Dennis, Derek, Kaleigh, Matthew, Timothy, Jessica, Heather, Justin, Kyle, Haley, Seth; and 18 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marian Moore.

Mr. Schott graduated from Bellevue High School in 1949, then worked for General Electric, and on the Nickel Plate Railroad as a gandy dancer.  He attended The Ohio State University through the Navy ROTC program, where he was awarded a commission and earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Education in 1955.  He served in the US Navy as a fighter pilot for 3 years, then returned to The Ohio State University to earn a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Ceramic Engineering in 1961. He was hired by Owens-Illinois in Toledo, where he worked for 25 years in research and development until his retirement in 1986.

Although he was a Navy pilot, his preferred method of travel was taking a train. He also enjoyed a great variety of outdoor activities, including primitive backpacking and camping, and cross-country skiing.  His greatest interest, however, was sailing.  He and his wife enjoyed many years of sailing on Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.  He was a member of the Toledo Power Squadron, where he also taught sailing and navigation classes.

He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Toledo.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church, or to OSU Naval ROTC Alumni Society Award Fund by clicking here

Friends and family will be received on Sunday, October 15, from 4 – 8 pm at Reeb Funeral Home, 5217 Main St, Sylvania, Ohio.  The funeral service will be at 11 am on Monday, October 16, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 5845 Elmer Dr., Toledo, Ohio.  Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon at the church.  Then at 3 pm, there will be a graveside service with military honors at Fish Cemetery on Zepernick Rd in Pemberville, Ohio.  Mr.  Schott’s son, Charlie Schott CDR USNR(Ret) will be the presenting officer.
